Professor Ângelo Teixeira was awarded with the University of Lisbon/Caixa Geral de Depósitos Scientific Award 2023 in the area of Mechanical Engineering, Naval Engineering and Aerospace Engineering (Aircraft).
These annual awards aim to reward scientific research activity and encourage the publication in international journals of recognized quality. The awards ceremony took place in the Noble Hall (Salão Nobre) of the Rectory of the University of Lisbon, on November 23, 2023, at 5:30 pm. ARCWIND Final Meeting 03-07-2023 in IST-CENTEC
The last meeting of the ARCWIND project took place at IST, Lisbon, on 30 June 2023. During the meeting all partners presented their main conclusions and achievements in the project.
The meeting was preceded by a workshop on Adaptation and Implementation of Floating Wind Energy Conversion Technology for the Atlantic Region – with an hybrid participation for the stakeholders and other interested professionals and organizations.

The 5th International Conference on Maritime Technology and Engineering – MARTECH 2020 – took place from 16th to 19th November 2020.
This conference is organised by the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC), in partnership with the Colégio de Engenharia Naval da Ordem dos Engenheiros. This year, the 5th MARTECH conference coincides with the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the creation of the first degree in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering in Portugal (Shipbuilding Engineering, at that time), as well as the celebrations of CENTEC’s 25th anniversary.
ARCWIND 4th Progress Meeting in Bilbao 27-12-2019 in IST-CENTEC
From 10 to 12 December 2019, ARCWIND partners have met in Bilbao to present the new achievements in the project.
It was also an opportunity to visit VICINAY’s premises and knowing the fabrication process of the moorings that will be used in the floating platforms as well as visit the place where SAITEC partner is assembled the 1:6 scale model of the 10MW turbine SATH platform that will be installed in SANTANDER’s Bay.

ARCWIND Project Mini-Symposium – 20 June 2019 26-06-2019 in IST-CENTEC
The mini symposium of ARCWIND project was hosted by UCC during the WESC Conference that took place from 17th to 20th June 2019 in Cork, Ireland.
The Mini-symposium was organized in 3 sessions, of 4 papers each, where the partners have presented their main achievements to adapt 3 floating wind energy platforms in the waters of the Atlantic Area. The symposium was attended by several researchers and experts who also participated in the conference and some synergies were created with other projects that also focus on floating wind energy platforms.

International Joint Laboratory of Naval Architecture and Offshore Technology 09-04-2019 in IST-Centec
The Ministry of Education of China announced the setting up of an International Joint Laboratory of Naval Architecture and Offshore Technology between the Harbin Engineering University (HEU) and the University of Lisbon (UL), at Harbin Engineering University Headquarters.
This approval is considered very important in China as it will be the only "International Joint Laboratory" in China in the scientific area of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. The University of Lisbon will, thus, be the only foreign university to hold this kind of association with China in this area.

1st WECANET Annual Assembly 2019 15-02-2019 in IST - CENTEC
Two CENTEC researcher members (José Gaspar and Hugo Diáz) have participated in the 1st WECANET Annual Assembly 2019 in Thessaloniki, Greece, on February 11-12, 2019 at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
WECANet is the first COST programme pan-European Network aiming to provide a platform and forum for efficient cross-border networking, exchange of information and identification of strategic research needed to deal with challenges and knowledge gaps for promoting deployment, commercialization and advancement of the wave energy sector. Through interdisciplinary approach and by deriving integrative concepts and tools for wave energy applications, WECANet aims at increasing confidence of potential investors, which will have beneficial impact on researchers and SMEs. WECANet’s main target is the equal research, collaboration and funding opportunities for all researchers.
Project HARBOUR.OWC 01-12-2018 in IST-CENTEC
The project HARBOUR.OWC: “Harbour protection with dual chamber oscillating water column devices”, aims to develop the recently created concept of dual chamber oscillating water column device.
The responsible researcher is Dr. João Alfredo Santos, member of CENTEC, being Prof C. Guedes Soares the Co-responsible, aims to study a device whose high-performance leads to significant improvement of energy production with respect to the conventional OWC devices, so that it can be employed either as an additional feature of existing rubble mound breakwaters or as standalone harbour creation structure. The project started in December 2018 and is funded by FCT (PTDC/EME-REN/30866/2017).

HIL4PTO project 08-10-2018 in IST-CENTEC
The objective of this project is experimentally investigate, test and develop a generic oil-hydraulic PTO concept for different wave energy converters.

The project SUBSEAPIPE, funded by P2020 is coordinated by Prof Julieta António e Prof Antonio Tadeu from ITECONS in Coimbra, with the participation of CENTEC team members, led by Prof C. Guedes Soa-res.
This project studies the use of cementitious cork composites for improved thermal performance of pipelines for ultradeep waters and started in September 2018.

The project seeks to develop the mathematical model and solution techniques for three-dimensional (3D) analytical hydrodynamic model for linear hydroelastic behavior of flexible floating structures for applications to floating breakwater and wave energy conversions.

The project ROUTING “Ship routing accounting for changeable sea conditions” started in March 2018 30-09-2018 in IST-CENTEC
The project ROUTING “Ship routing accounting for changeable sea conditions” led by CENTEC and with the participation of 3 polish partners started in March 2018.
The project, coordinated by Prof C. Guedes Soares, was approved by the MARTERA EraNet-Cofund programme with a global investment of 400.000 euros, funded by FCT in the Portuguese component. The project partners are the Universities of Gdynia and of Gdansk and the company NAVSIM, all from Poland. The project aims at developing a new type of weather forecast system that improves the features of present day weather routing systems. The project kick-off meeting took place at IST in Lisbon on 25-26 September 2018.

CLIMENA project 15-09-2018 in IST-CENTEC
Dr. Mariana Bernardino, CENTEC member is the responsible researcher of the FCT project CLIMENA that starts on October 2018, having as co-responsible Prof C. Guedes Soares.

OBSERVA.FISH project 03-09-2018 in IST-CENTEC
OBSERVA.FISH is a project coordinated by Dr Miguel Santos from IPMA, with the co-leadership of Prof. C. Guedes Soares from CENTEC.
Autonomous Observing Systems for Fishing Vessels (OBSERVA.FISH) has the objective of developing an autonomous system, for automatic monitoring of several meteorological and oceanographic parameters, to install onboard of all types of fishing vessels. The project has a dura-tion of 36 months, is funded by the P2020 programme and started on 1st September 2018.
MONIRISK project 02-09-2018 in IST-CENTEC

Project NAVAD 01-09-2018 in IST - CENTEC
The project Simulation of manoeuvrability of ships in adverse weather conditions (NAVAD) started on August, 10th, 2018, with a duration of 36 months.
Funded by the Programme P2020 and coordinated by the CENTEC researcher Dr. S. Sutulo, with Co-PI Prof C. Guedes Soares, aims the development and testing of fast combined mathematical models for seakeeping and manoeuvring in waves. The Portuguese Navy is a partner in the project.

In the scope of the 2017 FCT Call for SR&TD Project Grants, 10 R&D projects were approved with the participation of CENTEC, 8 of them led by CENTEC Research members, in a total funding larger than 2M Euros.

The 4th International Conference on Maritime Technology and Engineering (MARTECH) and the 15th National Congress of Maritime Technology and Engineering took place from 7 to 9 May 2018 at IST.
MARTECH 2018 and JETM’2018 were organized in parallel by CENTEC in partnership with Ordem dos Engenheiros. The Minister of the Sea, Ana Paula Vitorino, opened the session highlighting the im-portance of this sector for the growth of Portuguese economy: “the Portuguese government is committed to implement several strategies based on blue circular economy that enable to create a new cycle of economic development and to create a more sustainable environment”.

Project SISTSUB (Subsea Systems) was concluded on 30 April 2018
The 3 years project SISTSUB (Subsea Systems) was concluded on 30 April 2018. The project was conducted in collaboration with the Subsea Laboratory of COPPE/UFRJ and was funded by Petrogal Brasil. It dealt with the study of various concepts for exploration of oil fields, including surface platforms (FPSO), with different degrees of subsea processing up to Subsea to Shore concepts, considering the logistics of offshore operations and the economic and risk evaluation of the different concepts.

ARCWIND Kick-off Meeting in Lisbon on 13 and 14 November 2017 09-11-2017 in CENTEC - IST
The ARCWIND project (Adaptation and implementation of floating wind energy conversion technology for the Atlantic region) will have its first meeting on 13th and 14th November in Lisbon.
ARCWIND is being funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the INTERREG Atlantic Area Programme with a budget of 3,9 million euros. The main objective of ARCWIND is driving the floating wind energy forward to become a major contributor of GREEN ENERGY in the Atlantic Area Countries. The project is led by IST/CENTEC and the partnership involves 15 organizations from the 5 AA countries and 5 associated partners, which will meet during two days to plan the initial actions of the project.

Professor Guedes Soares delivered a keynote presentation at the International Conference on Quality, Reliability, Risk, Maintenance, and Safety Engineering (QR2MSE 2017) on “Maintenance Planning for Offshore Wind Turbines Using Petri Nets”.
Reliability with sustainability were key themes of the conference and Professor Guedes Soares talked about the challenges faced with maintenance and inspection of offshore wind farms. The conference took place on October 24-27, 2017, in Chengdu, Sichuan, China.

IMAM 2017 conference in Lisbon 20-10-2017 in IST-Centec
The 17th International Congress of the International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean (IMAM2017) on Developments in Maritime Transportation and Harvesting of Sea Resources was organised in Lisbon from 9 to 11 October 2017.
250 delegates attended the conference and 155 papers were presented in parallel sessions. The Conference had 3 special sessions dedicated in honour of Prof. Giovanni Benvenuto, Prof. Petar Kolev and Prof. Vedran Zanic. The proceedings were published by CRC /Taylor & Francis Group.

International Workshop on Maritime Safety and Smart Shipping (MSSS), Wuhan, China 29-09-2017 in IST-Centec
Prof. Guedes Soares was one of the invited keynote speakers in the International Workshop on Maritime Safety and Smart Shipping (MSSS) held in Wuhan, China on 25-26 September 2017.
Prof. Guedes Soares made a presentation on “Evaluation of near-collisions in an estuary using a marine traffic simulation model”. The workshop was organized by the National Engineering Research Center for Water Transport Safety and by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Research Center, of the Wuhan University of Technology.

Inauguration of the Extreme Loading and Response Joint Laboratory between Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) and University of Lisbon (ULisboa) 27-09-2017 in IST-Centec
A joint Laboratory between Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) and University of Lisbon (ULisboa) has been created at the Wuhan University of Technology, to promote a close cooperation between the College of Transportation of WUT and CENTEC, Instituto Superior Técnico.
At the ceremony, the institutions were represented by Prof Ling Zhu, the Dean of the College of Transportation of WUT and Prof C. Guedes Soares, President of CENTEC. This international laboratory aims at developing joint activities related with Extreme Loading and Response and related topics associated with of Ships and Offshore Structures and promoting exchanges of academic staff and students.

Visit to Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China 22-09-2017 in IST - Centec
Prof C. Guedes Soares has visited the Huazhong University of Science and Technology on September 20, 2017 where he delivered a seminar on Simulation Methods for the Assessment of Reliability of Structural and Mechanical Systems.
This University has a group led by Dr Min Ouyan, who has been doing important work related with resilience of infrastructures.

The Shanghai ranking of the world’s top universities has published recently the 2017 results, where Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering of Instituto Superior Técnico (Universidade de Lisboa) has been classified in 3rd place. The IST Distinguished Professor title was presented to Prof. Guedes Soares by the President of IST, Prof. Arlindo Oliveira, and by the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Prof. António Cruz Serra.
On 23 May, IST celebrated its 106th anniversary and during the ceremonies Prof. Carlos Guedes Soares was awarded the title of IST Distinguished Professor, in recognition for his exceptional contributions and for his scientific and academic leadership, on a national and international level, in the areas of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and Safety and Reliability.

The 6th International congress MARSTRUCT 2017 on Marine Structures took place from 8th to 10th May 2017 at IST Congress Centre.
The congress, organized by CENTEC, had 105 papers presented in 3 parallel sessions and around 170 participants. The proceedings have been published in a book by Taylor&Francis.

RESET project 05-05-2017 in IST - CENTEC
CENTEC participates in the RESET project - REliability and Safety Engineering and Technology for large maritime engineering systems, funded by H2020-MSCA-RISE-2016.
This project foresees secondments of the Researchers between partners and aims to develop and apply knowledge for safe and reliable design and operation of large maritime (marine and offshore) engineering systems. RESET started in May 1st, 2017 and has a duration of 4 years.

The 3rd International Conference MARTECH 2016 took place from 4 to 6 July 2016 at the Hotel Holiday Inn in Lisbon, being co-organised by CENTEC and the Portuguese Association of Engineers.

The Minister for the Sea, Ana Paula Vitorino, has opened the 14th Maritime Technology and Engineering Days that took place from 6 to 7 July 2016 in Lisbon, Portugal.
This event was organized by CENTEC-IST and the Naval Architecture section of the Portuguese Association of Engineers. In the Opening Session the President of IST, the President of the National Association of Engineers, the President of IPMA, the General-Secretary of the Portuguese Association of Naval Industries and the President of ETE Group have also made presentations.

The Scientific Prize ULisboa/Santander 2016, which distinguishes the Professor from the University of Lisbon with largest number of published papers and citations in indexed Journals in the areas of Ocean, Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering in the period 2011-2015, was awarded to Prof Carlos Guedes Soares, who had already received that prize in 2007.
