The Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering teaching programme reflects the quality of research conducted at CENTEC and the technological development of Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, which is recognised worldwide as a leading school in this area.

The professors of CENTEC promote the education of students in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, which is organized in three cycles of studies.

The first cycle of study has a span of three years and leads to an undergraduate degree (Licenciatura) in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering , having as its main aim to provide students with a solid foundation in mathematics and physics, information technology, and in engineering sciences, such as in the domains of applied mechanics, thermodynamics, mechanics of solids, fluid mechanics, systems control, and in naval architecture and ocean engineering.

The second cycle of study has a span of two years and provides advanced studies in the specialized field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, leading to a Master degree. It is a compulsory pre-requisite of Ordem dos Engenheiros, the Portuguese Association of Engineers, that to be professionally qualified as an Engineer one must conclude the MSc level of studies. In this second cycle of studies, a number of topics are covered, namely sea waves, ship dynamics, ship structures, machinery systems, maritime transport, ship design, shipyard technology and organization, ocean platforms and floating and subsea production systems.

The professors of CENTEC also participate in advanced studies of the third cycle in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering leading to a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) as well as the respective Doctoral Programme. They also participate in lecturing and coordinate an interdepartmental third cycle course leading to a Diploma of Advanced Training (DFA) on the Assessment of Risks, Safety and Reliability.
