Election of the CENTEC President for the period 2025-2028 20-11-2024 in CENTEC
The election process of the President of the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) for the term 2025-2028 took place between November 11 and 13, 2024. Prof. Yordan Garbatov, the current President of CENTEC, was re-elected for the next 4-year period.
International Ship and Offshore Structures (ISSC) 28-10-2024 in CENTEC-IST
Prof. Yordan Garbatov was elected president of the International Congress of Ships and Offshore Structures (ISSC), and Prof. Ângelo Teixeira, as general secretary for the 2025-2028 term.
The ISSC Congress is held every three years and is the most prestigious event in the field of naval and offshore structures, bringing together the world's greatest experts, who are part of 16 technical committees. During each term, state-of-the-art assessment reports are prepared in the various domains, which are subsequently submitted for discussion during Congress. The objectives of the ISSC include promoting international collaboration, suggesting design procedures and criteria, discussing ongoing studies, and simplifying the evaluation and dissemination of results from recent studies. ISSC encompasses ships and other vessels used for transportation, exploration of oceanic and underwater resources. The next Congress will take place in Lisbon between 4th and 8th September, 2028
COST Action CA23159: Decarbonising Waterborne Transportation (DeWaTra) 18-10-2024 in CENTEC - IST
The 1st meeting of the 4-year COST Action was in Brussels on 17th of October. The Chair is Prof Carlos Guedes Soares from CENTEC, and the Vice-Chair is Dr Oleksii Ivashenko from Det Norske Veritas.
DeWaTra addresses the challenges of achieving a higher level of sustainability in shipping by reducing CO2 emissions, improving energy efficiency, and ensuring compliance with international regulations. This initiative sets clear and ambitious goals, such as developing numerical models, assessing the performance of technology solutions, fostering capacity-building, and suggesting transport policy measures to promote sustainable maritime practices.

Prof. Guedes Soares visited NPU and participated in a colloquium organized by the School of Aeronautics.
During the colloquium offered a presentation on Strategies for Maintenance Planning of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines.

Visit to Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology (XAUAT) 20-08-2024 in IST-CENTEC
Prof. Guedes Soares visited the Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology (XAUAT) on 18 August 2024.

China Renewable Energy Congress (Blue Ocean-Green Energy Forum), Xi’an, 16-18 August, 2024 18-08-2024 in IST-CENTEC

Visit to Beihang University 30-07-2024 in IST-CENTEC
Prof. Guedes Soares visited Beihang University in China on 29 July 2024.
During the visit to the University, Prof. Guedes Soares had the opportunity to meet the academic staff and to give a Master Class to the students on: Safety, reliability and maintenance planning in the offshore industry.

Professor Guedes Soares was invited to participate in the QR2MSE 2024 and presented a keynote on: Analysis of Operational Data to Support Maintenance Planning of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines.

AI-enabled Ocean – Intelligent Technology promoting the revitalization of the Ship Innovation Alliance (WAIC20224) 10-07-2024 in IST-CENTEC
Prof. Guedes Soares presented a keynote speech on “Developments in the Technology for Unmanned and Autonomous Surface Vehicles” in the World AI Conference that was held in Shanghai from 4th to 6th July, 2024.

OMAE2024 took place in Singapore between 9 and 14 June 2024.

Winter School on Human Factors for Naval Architecture Design for Safety 01-06-2024 in IST-CENTEC
CENTEC in collaboration with the Western Norway University of Applied Science (HVL) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) promoted a Summer school on Human Factors for Naval Architecture Design for Safety that took place in the week 5-9 February at Técnico premises.
The second edition of this intensive course had 15 students who for a week deepened their knowledge of ergonomics to use in ship design or operation, making them more effective professionals in multi-disciplinary environments in the maritime industry.
7th International Conference on Maritime Technology and Engineering (MARTECH 2024) 20-05-2024 in IST-CENTEC
The Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) of Instituto Superior Técnico and the Portuguese Association of Engineers (OE),
organized the 7th International Conference on Maritime Technology and Engineering (MARTECH 2024) in parallel with the 17th edition of the Conference on Maritime Engineering and Technology (17 JETM) under the theme "Naval Engineering in Transition". This year the event coincided with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of CENTEC, created in 1994. MARTECH had 146 papers presented and around 200 participants.

5th workshop on waves and wave-coupled processes 15-04-2024 in IST-CENTEC
The 5th workshop on waves and wave-coupled processes, organized by ECMWF was held in Reading, UK, from 10 to 12 April 2024.
This meeting, aimed to identify key research and technological questions relevant for the uptake of relevant wave information in Earth System models. CENTEC was represented by Dr. Mariana Bernardino that presented a poster with the title “Changes in the wave climate during the 21st century - results from the CLIMENA project”.

Prof. Carlos Guedes Soares elected Chairman of WEGEMT 03-01-2024 in IST - CENTEC
Prof Guedes Soares was elected Chairman of WEGEMT for the next three years.
WEGEMT is the European Association of Universities in Marine Technology with about 40 associated Universities in 15 countries. WEGEMT was founded in 1978 with the aim of increasing the knowledge base, and updating and extending the skills and competence of practicing engineers and postgraduate students working at an advanced level in marine technology and related sciences.
