Visit in the scope of the Bilateral Project with India - MUP 27-12-2017 in IST-CENTEC
Prof. D. Karmakar from the Dept. of Applied Mechanics and Hydrodynamics of the National Institute of Technology Karnakata, Surathkal has visited CENTEC between 10 and 21 December 2017 in the scope of the bilateral project MUP.
MUP – Study on the performance of combined wave and wind energy multi-use platform, is a project funded by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology.
First meeting of the OCEANERA_Net Project ELASTMOOR 23-11-2017 in CENTEC - IST
The first meeting of the ELASTMOOR project (Elastic mooring systems for wave energy converters), will be held on 27 and 28 November 2017.
The meeting of the ELASTMOOR project (Elastic mooring systems for wave energy converters) coordinated by CENTEC, will take place at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, with the participation of all partners. This meeting has the purpose of planning the detailed activities that will be developed during the project and the coordination of the existing collaboration between the partners.

Prof C Guedes Soares, in his quality of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Marine Science and Application (JMSA) has organized an International Workshop on Wave Loads and Motions of Ships and Offshore Structures in Harbin Engineering University, China.
Prof. C. Guedes Soares presented a work on Abnormal Waves and their Effects on Ships and Offshore Structures. The workshop has originated a special issue of the Journal of Marine Science and Application (Vol. 17, Issue 3, 2018) compiling most of the presentations made at the workshop.

International Workshop on Wave Loads and Motions of Ships and Offshore Structures in Harbin 10-11-2017 in IST-Centec
Professor C. Guedes Soares, as Editor In-Chief of the Journal of Marine Science and Application has organized the “International Workshop on Wave Loads and Motions of Ships and Offshore Structures”.
The workshop was held on November 5-7, 2017 in Harbin in collaboration with the Harbin Engineering University. The papers presented at the workshop are published in JMSA.

ARCWIND Kick-off Meeting in Lisbon on 13 and 14 November 2017 09-11-2017 in CENTEC - IST
The ARCWIND project (Adaptation and implementation of floating wind energy conversion technology for the Atlantic region) will have its first meeting on 13th and 14th November in Lisbon.
ARCWIND is being funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the INTERREG Atlantic Area Programme with a budget of 3,9 million euros. The main objective of ARCWIND is driving the floating wind energy forward to become a major contributor of GREEN ENERGY in the Atlantic Area Countries. The project is led by IST/CENTEC and the partnership involves 15 organizations from the 5 AA countries and 5 associated partners, which will meet during two days to plan the initial actions of the project.

Prof. C. Guedes Soares was an invited keynote lecturer at the 3rd Workshop & Symposium on Safety and Integrity Management of Operations in Harsh Environments that was held in St. Johns Newfoundland, Canada.
Prof. Guedes Soares presented a lecture on “Risk and reliability assessment in the offshore industry”. These series of workshops are being organized by the Centre for Risk, Integrity and Safety Engineering (C-RISE) da Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Keynote at QR2MSE 2017 at Chengdu, Sichuan, China 28-10-2017 in IST-CENTEC
Professor Guedes Soares delivered a keynote presentation at the International Conference on Quality, Reliability, Risk, Maintenance, and Safety Engineering (QR2MSE 2017) on “Maintenance Planning for Offshore Wind Turbines Using Petri Nets”.
Reliability with sustainability were key themes of the conference and Professor Guedes Soares talked about the challenges faced with maintenance and inspection of offshore wind farms. The conference took place on October 24-27, 2017, in Chengdu, Sichuan, China.

IMAM 2017 conference in Lisbon 20-10-2017 in IST-Centec
The 17th International Congress of the International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean (IMAM2017) on Developments in Maritime Transportation and Harvesting of Sea Resources was organised in Lisbon from 9 to 11 October 2017.
250 delegates attended the conference and 155 papers were presented in parallel sessions. The Conference had 3 special sessions dedicated in honour of Prof. Giovanni Benvenuto, Prof. Petar Kolev and Prof. Vedran Zanic. The proceedings were published by CRC /Taylor & Francis Group.

International Workshop on Maritime Safety and Smart Shipping (MSSS), Wuhan, China 29-09-2017 in IST-Centec
Prof. Guedes Soares was one of the invited keynote speakers in the International Workshop on Maritime Safety and Smart Shipping (MSSS) held in Wuhan, China on 25-26 September 2017.
Prof. Guedes Soares made a presentation on “Evaluation of near-collisions in an estuary using a marine traffic simulation model”. The workshop was organized by the National Engineering Research Center for Water Transport Safety and by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Research Center, of the Wuhan University of Technology.

Inauguration of the Extreme Loading and Response Joint Laboratory between Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) and University of Lisbon (ULisboa) 27-09-2017 in IST-Centec
A joint Laboratory between Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) and University of Lisbon (ULisboa) has been created at the Wuhan University of Technology, to promote a close cooperation between the College of Transportation of WUT and CENTEC, Instituto Superior Técnico.
At the ceremony, the institutions were represented by Prof Ling Zhu, the Dean of the College of Transportation of WUT and Prof C. Guedes Soares, President of CENTEC. This international laboratory aims at developing joint activities related with Extreme Loading and Response and related topics associated with of Ships and Offshore Structures and promoting exchanges of academic staff and students.

Visit to Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China 22-09-2017 in IST - Centec
Prof C. Guedes Soares has visited the Huazhong University of Science and Technology on September 20, 2017 where he delivered a seminar on Simulation Methods for the Assessment of Reliability of Structural and Mechanical Systems.
This University has a group led by Dr Min Ouyan, who has been doing important work related with resilience of infrastructures.

The Shanghai ranking of the world’s top universities has published recently the 2017 results, where Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering of Instituto Superior Técnico (Universidade de Lisboa) has been classified in 3rd place. The IST Distinguished Professor title was presented to Prof. Guedes Soares by the President of IST, Prof. Arlindo Oliveira, and by the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Prof. António Cruz Serra.
On 23 May, IST celebrated its 106th anniversary and during the ceremonies Prof. Carlos Guedes Soares was awarded the title of IST Distinguished Professor, in recognition for his exceptional contributions and for his scientific and academic leadership, on a national and international level, in the areas of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and Safety and Reliability.

6th International Congress MARSTRUCT2017 15-05-2017 in IST-CENTEC
The 6th International congress MARSTRUCT 2017 on Marine Structures took place from 8th to 10th May 2017 at IST Congress Centre.
The congress, organized by CENTEC, had 105 papers presented in 3 parallel sessions and around 170 participants. The proceedings have been published in a book by Taylor&Francis.

RESET project 05-05-2017 in IST - CENTEC
CENTEC participates in the RESET project - REliability and Safety Engineering and Technology for large maritime engineering systems, funded by H2020-MSCA-RISE-2016.
This project foresees secondments of the Researchers between partners and aims to develop and apply knowledge for safe and reliable design and operation of large maritime (marine and offshore) engineering systems. RESET started in May 1st, 2017 and has a duration of 4 years.

The Medal of Distinction from the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) was awarded to the researchers from CENTEC.
