Tecnico Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering students shine at the 17th International College Snow Sculpture Contest in Harbin, China 04-02-2025 in CENTEC-IST
Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering students proudly represented Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) at the 17th International College Snow Sculpture Contest, organised by Harbin Engineering University (HEU) in China, from January 4 to 7, 2025.
The Master’s students Sara Serpa and João Simão formed the amateur team from the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering program, led by Prof. Haitong Xu. They chose the iconic Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos) as their sculpture design. The project incorporated principles of structural integrity and aesthetic design. Their exceptional work earned them an Excellence Prize, highlighting the quality and creativity of their sculpture. Beyond the competition, the team had the opportunity to experience traditional Chinese culture, including Tai Chi, tea ceremonies, and local cuisine. They also formed close friendships with three HEU volunteers, who provided invaluable support throughout their stay. This experience allowed the team to immerse themselves in Harbin's ice and snow culture and offered valuable insights into the intersection of engineering and art in a global context.
