Instrumented observations (passive experiments) of berthing/unberthing procedures were carried out with two types of fast passenger catamarans equipped with steerable water-jet propulsion systems operating on the Tagus river (Lisbon, Portugal). A specially set up measurement and data acquisition system included a high-precision GPS receiver, an autonomous fibre optics gyrocompass, a rate gyro and a wind sensor. The operator’s control actions were registered without tapping the ship’s own control circuits, by means of videoing continuously, with a highdefinition camera, the LED indicators of the reversing buckets’ positions and of the nozzle’s deflection angles. In total, 54 berthing/unberthing events were recorded. The post-processing resulted in trajectories with the instant ship positions shown and in time histories for main manoeuvring parameters augmented with control action marks. Examples of trajectories and time histories are given and primary analysis of the obtained data is presented.
