Fonseca, N., Guedes Soares, C. and Pascoal, R. (2007), “Influence of FPSO Length on the Global Loads Induced by Abnormal Waves”, Proceedings of the 10th International Symposium on Practical Design of Ships and Other Floating Structures (PRADS´07), 30 Setembro - 5 October, Houston, Texas, United States of America

The paper presents an investigation of the vertical bending moments induced by abnormal or freak waves on FPSO platforms with different lengths. The objective is to assess the influence of the platform dimensions on the global structural loads induced by realistic extreme conditions. The abnormal waves are realistic since they were measured during storms, and are believed to represent some of the worst events that the floating structures could encounter during their operational lifetime. The calculations are carried out for 6 similar FPSOs, with lengths between 150m and 400m, using a nonlinear time domain seakeeping code. All geometric and mass properties are Froude scaled between different sizes of the platforms.
