Pascoal, R. and Guedes Soares, C. (2009), “Kalman Filtering of Vessel Motions for Ocean Wave Directional Spectrum Estimation”, Ocean Engineering, Vol. 36, Issues 6-7, pp. 477-488

This paper proposes a faster than real-time iterative procedure for estimating the ocean wave directional spectrum from vessel motion data. It uses as raw data only some measurements which are commonly available in dynamically positioned vessels and that may easily be installed on other displacement type hulls, thus making it an inexpensive solution to complement existing real-time or offline estimation procedures, even as stand alone if certain details are improved. Kalman filtering algorithm for iterative harmonic detection and frequency domain vessel response data are used in the estimation procedure. The results and conclusions are still preliminary, primarily because they are based on synthesized data, but extremely promising.
