Guedes Soares, C. (1990), “Comparison of Measurements and Calculations of Wave Induced Vertical Bending Moments in Ship Models”, International Shipbuilding Progress, Vol. 37, Issue 412, pp. 353-374

Calculations have been performed of wave induced vertical bending moments using a linear theory of ship motions and they have been compared with various sets of measurements on ship models. The results show the general ggod engineering accuracy of the linear theory indicating, however, that it depends on the block coefficient of the model, on its heading and speed. Measurements on similar ships made at different laboratories compare differently with the calculations. Calculations with different computer codes also yield different results when applied to the same ship. It is concluded that the level of accuracy to be expected from the calculations cannot be better than the uncertainty involved with the calculations or the measurements.
