Veltcheva, A. and Guedes Soares, C. (2007), “Analysis of Abnormal Wave Records by the Hilbert Huang Transform Method”, Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, Vol. 24, pp. 1678-1689

An attempt to gain a deeper insight in freak wave event is made by using HHT method for investigation of freak wave records. The characteristics of freak waves are examined on the basis of local decomposition of wave data into Intrinsic Mode Functions. The variations of amplitude of IMF around the time of occurrence of freak waves are examined in order to investigate the contribution of different IMF to the freak wave profile and an attempt is made to find relationship between them. The changes of local frequency of each IMF in the vicinity of freak wave is examined. The essential nonlinearity of freak waves is considered as intra-wave frequency modulation, a variation of the instantaneous frequency within one oscillation cycle. The Hilbert spectrum is used as a detector of freak waves.
