Guedes Soares, C. (1990), “Stochastic Models of Load Effects for the Primary Ship Structure”, Structural Safety, Vol. 8, pp. 353-368

The available stochastic models for the characterization of the main load effects acting on ship structures are presented and discussed. A description is provided of the still water and the wave-induced load components, both as concerns fatigue loading and extreme situations. Load combination is also adresses as well as the derivation of characteristic values appropriate for design. While fatigue loading will be the basis of linear structural analysis, the extreme load conditions refered here often require non-linear structural analysis.
