Teixeira, A.P. and Guedes Soares, C. (2006), “Probabilistic Modelling of the Ultimate Strength of Plates with Random Fields of Corrosion”, Proceedings of the 5th Computational Stochastic Mechanics Conference (5CSM), 21-23 June, Rhodes-Greece, Spanos, P. D. (Ed.)

This paper presents a study of probabilistic modelling of the collapse strength of steel plates with non-uniform corrosion represented by random fields. The random fields of corrosion are discretized and the collapse strength of the plate is then assessed by nonlinear finite element analysis. The importance of the spatial representation of the corrosion by random fields in alternative to the traditional approach based on a uniform reduction of plate thickness is demonstrated. Finally, an example of probabilistic modelling of the collapse strength of corroded plates by the inverse reliability method is presented.
