Jacinto, C., Canoa, M., Fialho, T., Antão, P. and Guedes Soares, C. (2006), "Accident Causation Factors in the Food Industry in Portugal", Proceedings of the Working on Safety Conference (WOS'06), 12-15 September, Eemhof, Netherlands

This paper reports preliminary results of a research work concerning the causes of occupational accidents in the Food Industry in Portugal. The main purpose of this study, which covers both immediate and underlying causes, was to gain a better insight of the most relevant factors and conditions contributing to accidents at organisational and management level. Data was collected through in-depth investigations carried out in the field by visiting several firms of the sector and conducting interviews with the injured people and their managers. To this purpose the WAIT method and its classification schemes were used. Although the study is not yet completed, as accident data is still being collected and analysed, the preliminary results are presented and discussed here. This first set of results, however, show the usefulness of carrying out this type of thorough analysis and allow opening doors for future developments on the way in which accident data is collected and used for designing preventive strategies.
