This paper addresses the new Common Structural Rules, which entered into force April 2006, and illustrates its impact on the ultimate strength and on the reliability of an existing single hull bulk carrier redesigned to comply with new IACS requirements. The ultimate collapse bending moment is calculated by advanced collapse analysis of the midship cross sections of the two bulk carrier designs. The evaluation of the wave induced load effects that occur during long-term operation of the ship in the seaway is carried out and the stochastic model of the still water induced loads is defined based on information of vertical bending moment given in the loading manual. The results of the reliability analysis are obtained for net scantlings with 0% and 50% of corrosion addition of the two bulk carrier designs using a first order reliability method.
