Sutulo, S. and Guedes Soares, C. (2006), “Numerical Study of Ship Rolling in Turning Manoeuvres”, Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Stability of Ships and Ocean Vehicles (STAB´06), 25-29 September, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

A unified mathematical model pretending tp adequately describe both manoeuvring and seakeeping motions of surface displacement ships recently developed by the authors is used for numerical investigation of the ship motions in turning manoeuvres under action of regular waves. The 6DOF model combines a semi-empiric model for the still-water manoeuvring forces with a model for the seakeeping forces built a straightforward generalization of the ordinary strip method. Comparative simulations included unrestrained and restrained straight runs in beam seas, and truning manoeuvres in still water and under action of the same waves and they demonstrated that the attained instantaneous roll angles can be higher in turning than in the straight run.
