Sun, H.-H. and Guedes Soares, C. (2006), "Reliability-Based Inspection for Corroded Ship-Type FPSO Hulls", Journal of Ship Research, Vol. 50, Issue 2, pp. 171-180

Hull inspection of ship-type FPSO units is quite difficult and costly due to the feature of no dry-docking. Converted FPSO unit from oil tankers is more economical than new-built one in many cases but need to be taken more crucial inspection. The current inspection practice for ship-type FPSO units is heavily based on prior experience from oil tankers, which may incur higher costs or yield unsatisfactory results and unnecessary inspections. This paper discusses the probabilistic corrosion model in ship hulls. Based on the time-dependent reliability method and lower limit requirement of safety level suggested, the corrosion renewal criteria is suggested and the reliability based inspection planning is recommended for ship-type FPSO hulls quantitatively.
