A study of global hull vibrations, in particular the vertical vibrations of the hull girder using a simplified approach where the ships hull is modelled as a free-free beam is presented. A complete study from free to forced vibration of a free-free prismatic beam, involving the study of numerical methods for determination of the natural frequencies, numerical time integration methods for forced vibration, and a parallel study on some important aspects of the vibration problem; A preliminary study on the vibration of a very fast ship using the simplified approach regarding the ship hull as a free-free beam with cross-sectional properties similar to the midship section.
