In recent work several waves were identified which would satisfy the presently accepted criteria to classify waves as abnormal. These criteria involve parameters that describe the geometric characteristics of the individual waves and also their relation with higher order statistical moments of the sea states in which they occurred. The waves have occurred in various storms in more than one location in the North Sea and during a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, which are very different wave conditions and thus the comparison will help to through light on the nature of this type of waves. The study is also complemented by studying probabilistic distributions of the sea states in which these waves occurred and comparing them with the models that are generally accepted and used for sea states that do not have these abnormal waves.
