A description is presented of the approach adopted in the development of a GIS system that operates over a large database of wave conditions to select the ones applicable o a certain ship route. In the recently concluded HIPOCAS project a database of 44 years of hindcast wave data has been produced for the European waters and for the North Atlantic.
