This paper presents a reliability based approach to determine the design loads for the remaining hull lifetime. The evaluation of the wave induced load effects that occur during long-term operation of the ship in the seaway is carried out. The still water loads are defined on the basis of a statistical analysis that accounts for the ship type. Additionally, load combination factors are introduced to achieve a reduction of the design bending moment. Two reliability formulations are discussed and their results are compared in an example of a tanker. In particular the effect of the reference time used in the reliability assessments is investigated. Finally, the problem on how to specify the loads to be used to verify the hull strength as a function of the intended remaining lifetime is discussed.
