This paper presents an optimization methodology for ship watertight subdivision and applies it to a modern fast ferry ship. The optimisation problem considered in this study includes a number of conflicting objective-functions and a number of design variables related to the watertight subdivision of the ship. The selected optimisation method is a multiple objective genetic algorithm. Use is made of commercial software for both the optimization and the damage stability calculations, but a tailor-made interface between different software is also described and applied. The results of a case study for a modern fast ferry are presented, discussed and the main conclusions are stated.
