This paper compares the state of application of safety and reliability approaches in various industries in different countries. It particular it deals with the Power, Process, Oil and Gas, Maritime, Highways and Building sectors. It draws the similarities and key differences between the sectors and aims to identify where the best practice can be found on various technological areas. It deals with the regulatory framework and the status of the available Code standards and guidance documents. The present position with regard to a number of key technical aspects involved in the use of safety and reliability are discussed. Based on this a technology maturity matrix is presented. Barriers to the wider use of risk and reliability methods in design and operation of installations are identified and possible ways of overcoming these barriers are suggested.
