A method has been developed to determine the loads in terms of bending moments and shear forces induced by a time series on the hulls of ships and floating platforms and it has been used to predict the responses to a time series measured at the Draupner Platform, which includes an abnormal wave. The results of the simulation method have been compared with the results of tests on a model of a FPSO hull subjected to the same time trace and excellent results were obtained giving confidence on the predictions of the numerical method. This method has been applied to determine the response of a containership and a FPSO to the Draupner time series and the results of the wave-induced loads have been compared with the results of the traditional long-term probability distribution and with the values of Classification Societies requirements. This has showed that for these specific hulls and the specific wave the loads are within what was expected and thus there appears to be no need to change the design requirements.
