The study investigates the dynamic response and mooring tensions for a three-leg taut moored wave energy converter in two irregular seas using fully coupled analysis in software SIMA. The effects of the dynamic stiffness of synthetic moorings are analyzed by using four models regarding the axial stiffness of the cables. The first one considers a constant value for the cable stiffness. The second one utilizes an empirical expression for dynamic stiffness with an iterative process following a practical mooring analysis procedure of DNV. The latter two apply the Syrope model and the bi-linear model, respectively proposed by DNV and ABS. The results of wave energy converter motions and mooring tensions obtained from these models are compared and discussed. Results show that the tensions estimated by the dynamic stiffness models are up to twice those determined using the constant stiffness approach, while the WEC motions are slightly reduced.
