Zhang, Lu., Duan, WY., Huang, L.M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2025), Improve wave forecast using artificial intelligence, Innovations in Renewable Energies Offshore, Guedes Soares, C. & Wang S. (Ed.), Taylor and Francis Group, London, UK, 61-67.
This paper addresses the improvement of the accuracy of wave forecasts for the next 15 days by proposing a wave forecast model based on machine learning techniques. The model forecasts significant wave heights using buoy measurement data and environmental data provided by the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast. Various factors such as model inputs, hyperparameters and model structure are optimized. Forecasting models are developed for various forecasting horizons, specifically at intervals of 1, 3, 6, 10, and 15 days. Additionally, the adaptability of the model in varying conditions is explored. To validate the performance of the forecasting model, multiple buoys in the coastal waters of the eastern United States are selected for analysis. The results indicate that the proposed wave forecasting model significantly improves the accuracy of wave predictions, thereby providing a valuable tool for enhanced forecasting in complex marine environments.
