Guedes Soares, C., Pascoal, R. and Veltcheva, A. (2005), “Insight on the Nonlinearity of Sea Waves by Hilbert Huang Transform Method", Proceedings of 5th International Symposium on Ocean Waves Measurement and Analysis (WAVES´05), 3-7 of July, CD Edition, Madrid, Spain

The Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT) method for nonlinear and non-stationary data time series analysis is adopted to study sea waves. The interpretation of wave nonlinearity on the basis of HHT analysis is a frequency modulation, which is fundamentally different from the commonly accepted concept of harmonic generation. The wave nonlinearity is also examined by second order wave theory as the peculiarities of individual waves are checked and compared with the HHT view of wave asymmetry. The HHT method provides new insights on the nonlinear and non-stationary nature of real waves and complements the long existing view based on the Fourier analysis.
