This paper aims at description of the set-up and application of a third-generation wave model for the Black Sea. Besides, model output is validated against directional buoy and wave gauge measurements. To achieve the purposes of this study a 10-year wave hindcast is implemented spanning the period 1990-1999. Wind fields come from the REMO model driven by the global NCEP reanalysis project. This most reliable at the present moment atmospheric data is used to force the state-of-the-art WAM cycle 4 wave model. The paper begins with a description of the basin main climatic features. Furthermore, the basic dynamics and numeric scheme of the adopted wave model are described as well as the details on its setting-up procedure. Special attention is paid to the wind data utilized. The discussion on wave parameters time series comparison coupled with maps representing simulation of the basin-wide wave fields. The latter is done in attempt the specific patterns of model performance for the Black Sea to be explained. Error statistics are also shown to throw additional light on the investigated topics.
