Guedes Soares, C., Bhattacharjee, J., Tello, M. and Pietra, L. (2012), Review and classification of Wave Energy Converters, Maritime Engineering and Technology, Guedes Soares, C. Garbatov Y. Sutulo S. & Santos T. A. (Eds.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 585-594

In the present paper an overview of existing Wave Energy Converters (WECs) is presented and possible means of classification are proposed, with the aim of identifying the most promising technologies to take to a further step of investigation, where just a limited number of devices will be compared in detail. A common principle to classify WECs is based on their mode of operation, but it is recognized that some devices share the potentiality of being incorporated in breakwater structures, others to be coupled to offshore wind turbines; some are thought to be deployed in arrays, other as solo machines: these constitute alternative categorization logics that are also considered. Advantages and disadvantages of each class are outlined, and concepts presenting distinguishing features are pointed out. Parameters are looked for, to base an evaluation and comparison on.
