Vieira, Mh. and Guedes Soares, C. (2024), Nearshore wind-wave spectrum estimation by a low-cost video system, Advances in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A. (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, pp. 691-695.
Two conventional, low-cost action cameras with a freeware synchronization technique are used to estimate the time-varying three-dimensional sea surface elevation map and its associated wave number frequency spectrum. Spatio-temporal measurements in very shallow water are conducted with the cameras and are validated with a moored pressure sensor as single point data reference inside the reconstructed area. The error in significant wave height is of the order of few centimeters and the treatment of the images obtained is perfectly able to identify the peak period of the in-situ measured spectrum. Although not in the ideal conditions of perfect light diffusion and camera settings, the stereo video uncertainties could be reduced to a quantified error of the order of millimeters.
