The Burr distribution is adopted to model the environmental contours along the Portuguese continental coast using the Inverse-First Order Reliability Method. The resulting final contours constructed considering the Burr-Lognormal as a probabilistic model are compared with the contours constructed with Generalised Extreme Value-Lognormal distributions as baseline. The high-quality ERA5 dataset is used to demonstrate the approach. The Burr-Lognormal contours are determined along the Portuguese coast. The numerical implementation showed that the proposed scheme is a valid practical approach to accomplish step one in the contour construction. Moreover, the new scheme demonstrates high flexibility in characterizing rare and scattered events, despite the challenging complexity that consist of this task.
