Viegas, S.D., Sutherland, L.S. and Miller, P.H. (2024), Initial structural analysis of a Portuguese "Muleta" lateen mainsail yard, Advances in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A. (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, pp. 509-517.
The ‘Muleta’ was a traditional Portuguese fishing boat. The last remaining example is the replica ‘Álvaro Velho’ whose 16.5 m wooden lateen mainsail yard failed. This paper concerns the ongoing work to design a composite material replacement. A simple bending only analysis design gave a 40% in weight reduction. To include the effects of shear, a finite element analysis approach has also been undertaken. A baseline numerical model of the strength and stiffness of the original replica yard (conservatively of Douglas Fir) has first been developed, and then very successfully corroborated with the previous simplified analytical model, giving confidence in both approaches. Development of the numerical model to consider shear effects and to give a new, refined composite materials design is underway. The aim is to facilitate economically viable and longer lifecycle composite yard replacements for both the Muleta and the numerous other traditional sailing craft of the Tejo.
