Calvário, M., Wang, S. and Guedes Soares, C. (2024), Influence of the laminate stiffness on the slamming response of composite wedges, Advances in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A. (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, pp. 359-366.
This paper assesses the impact response of a panel made of composite materials, with different couplings on the laminate stiffness. The analysis is undertaken considering quasi-isotropic, symmetric and cross-ply laminates based on a glass fibre reinforced polymer. The wedge geometry is derived from a case study presented in the literature and two impact velocities corresponding to freefall and constant drop. The comparison between laminates takes into consideration the results of the slamming force, pressure and strain in sensors, in which the fluid-structure interaction is obtained with an explicit finite element approach. According to the results, significant differences are found between the velocity scenarios and high deformations are reached for the cross ply-laminate in the constant velocity scenario.
