A numerical Finite Element Analysis model of a production E-glass and carbon fibre handlaminated composite material slalom windsurfer fin has been successfully validated in terms of both longitudinal bending and lateral twist via experimental mechanical cantilever tests utilising video-extensometry techniques. The effects on fin bending and twist (instrumental in determining sailing performance) of hydro-elastic tailoring of the internal layup was explored via rotations firstly of the internal ‘wing spar’ UD 0° carbon plies, and secondly of the external ‘wing skin’ woven ±45° carbon plies. Also, the effects of substituting expensive carbon with more economical E-glass internal UD plies was investigated. Various methods of increasing and/or decreasing fin twist and/or bending stiffness were found, and the information presented on this will aid the designer to achieve the specific structural and hence sailing behaviour desired.
