A numerical model is built to study the performance of gravity cages on the coast of Algarve. A review is made of the situation in Portugal concerning offshore aquaculture and the areas in Algarve that are planned for this activity are identified. From the previous study, the high-tenacity polyester multifilament fibre has excellent performance for a gravity cage system, which is used as the mooring material in this work. The mooring ropes are modelled by nonlinear spring elements. Data on the wave conditions on the coast of Algarve is used. The amplitudes of the mooring force and the distributions of mooring force amplitudes are calculated. From the results, the maximum mooring force is below the break force of the material. The amplitude distribution of the mooring forces and the maximum amplitude are shown. The results are compared with the previous studies on the mooring forces in the coasts of Madeira and Azores for the application of the same gravity cage system.
