For performing time-domain simulations, a manoeuvring model of the hull forces is required. In some cases it is convenient to define an asymptotic approximation of such model. This results in a simpler model, easier to fit, even if the validity range is reduced. In this study, the asymptotic approximation problem is investigated through two different methods based on spherical harmonic expansion. The first method consists in applying a Taylor series to the spherical harmonics, the second one in linking the linear hydrodynamic coefficients to the harmonic ones. Both methods are applied to experimental results and it is shown that both approximated models fit well the experimental data. The approximation works best when closer to the condition sailing straight, nonetheless the error is still acceptable even in a larger range. In addition, the mathematical formulations becomes simpler, since it is no longer required to evaluate the complete spherical harmonic functions.
