This paper establishes safety barriers for preventing leaks from failures of maintenance operations on-board LNG floaters. The establishment of safety barriers is conducted according to the developed guidelines for safety barrier management for the oil and gas industry of the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The background on the concepts of safety barriers and safety barrier management is presented. The recently developed literature for investigating failure of maintenance operations in the process industry is consulted for providing the input for this study regarding the process of maintenance operation and its failure-related aspects. Finally, the study is concluded by proposing safety barriers for preventing leaks from failure of maintenance operations, in addition to, discussing the benefits of utilising the safety barrier management concept for improving the operational safety and the possibility of its integration in modelling the risk dynamically.
