This paper introduces a method for identifying collision avoidance behaviour using Automatic Identification System data from a heavy traffic area. The method encompasses two primary stages: (1) The method clusters the ship trajectory using the Ordering Points to Identify the Clustering Structure algorithm and then extracts the route boundary by the Kernel Density Estimation method. (2) It extracts trajectory pairs involving collision risks by the Velocity Obstacle method, followed by the extraction of avoidance behaviour based on heading changes. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the method is applied to a heavy traffic area in Shanghai, China, where collision avoidance behaviours were extracted from one week’s worth of data.
