Lotovskyi, E., Rong, H. and Teixeira, A.P. (2024), Collision risk assessment in ship encounter scenarios using AIS trajectory data, Advances in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A. (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, pp. 135-142.
This paper presents an approach to collision risk assessment in maritime traffic, utilising AIS trajectory data and manoeuvrability characteristics of the vessels. The proposed model evaluates the change in collision risk during ship evasive manoeuvres considering the vessels’ manoeuvrability, ensuring a realistic representation. The methodology introduces two parameters to assess and manage the risk of collision: the probability of collision and the safety window of rudder input. A case study explores near-collision scenarios. Results are discussed, encompassing trajectories, collision probabilities and safety window assessments, providing insights into the collision risk during ship evasive manoeuvres. The study can be further developed for collision avoidance applications.
