This paper presents a survey of offshore supply operations in the oil and gas industry in the North Sea, aiming to improve Brazilian operations in the same sector. It comprises an assessment of the physical locations and characteristics of supply bases in the Norwegian, Dutch and United Kingdom sectors of the North Sea and Norwegian Sea. The main characteristics of the supply bases are identified and the driving parameters in planning their location are identified. The fleet of supply vessels operating in the various sectors of this area is characterized as to type, main dimensions and cargo capacity. The patterns of operation of the vessels are identified, characterized and grouped in typical profiles. Finally, the operations of specific vessels are analyzed in detail for a period of a month. Conclusions are drawn regarding the bases, the fleet and its operations, including a comparison between the different sectors.
