The description of irregular sea states is given in terms of the superposition of various components of small amplitude linear waves. It is indicated that the time variation of the free surface elevation can be idealized as a stationary process that becomes fully described by a variance spectrum. Different spectra currently used to describe wave environments are discussed. The wave force generation mechanism is described. Short term and long term probabilistic models are considered. 9. Guedes Soares, C., Krogstad, H. E., and Prevosto, M., (1994), "Wavemod Project: Probability Models for Coastal Site Investigations", OCEANS 94, Vol. I, pp.493-497 Abstract: The objective of the WAVEMOD project is to develop a probabilistic methodology for coastal site investigations. The methodology allows integration of complex or irregular phenomena through a combination of physical insight and statistical analysis of actual conservatuins. A probabilistic approach to derive the design conditions for coastal engineering problems, development of stochastic model of waves and current parameters and integration of existing data with new measurements and mathematical models are the main topics of the project.
