Clarindo, G. and Guedes Soares, C. (2024), Environmental contours of sea states by the I-FORM approach derived with the Burr-Lognormal statistical model, Ocean Engineering, Vol. 291, 116315

Environmental contours are constructed using the Inverse-First Order Reliability Methods based on return periods of one and twenty years. The resulting final contour constructed based on the implementation of Burr-Lognormal as a statistical model is compared with the contours constructed with the commonly applied model considering Weibull-Lognormal as the baseline. The numerical implementation shows that the proposed scheme is valid as a practical alternative to the classical statistical baseline used to accomplish step one of the process of the environmental contour construction. The maximum values defined as critical points (combinations of variables) predicted by the Burr-Lognormal statistical model implemented in this study are considered reliable and consistent due to the good predictive power of severe conditions associated with the contour lines. Moreover, the environmental contours from the newly implemented scheme demonstrate high flexibility in characterizing the extreme events, despite the challenging complexity that consists of this task.
