This paper starts with a review of the different types of wave converters identifying the trend of using composite materials for their fabrication and the types and the situations that are prone to wave slamming. It then presents a study of a composite sandwich panel subjected to water entry, analysing it with an explicit finite element approach. The wedge has a deadrise angle of 10 degrees and the sandwich panel is made-off polymeric skins and a PVC foam core. The results are compared with publish experimental data. The panel is modelled with shell and solid finite elements and a comparison is carried out between these elements with regards to the slamming force and material deformation. Moreover, a convergence study is presented and the effect of a penalty factor on the simulations is presented. According to the results, shell finite element model obtained a reasonable approximation in both slamming force and deformations while in case of the solid finite element model a higher discrepancy was found.
