The paper uses the well-known Dijkstra’s shortest path algorithm to systematically characterize the maritime traffic of the continental coast of Portugal. The approach consists of using historical AIS data to build a graph in which the nodes are cells of a grid covering the geographical area being studied and the weights of directional edges are inversely related to ship movements between cells. This route identification method is applied to characterize the maritime traffic pattern off the continental Portuguese coast, as well as between two other boundaries identified as potentially interesting through observation of traffic density maps. A similar approach is used to obtain the speed profiles along routes that are adequate to determine the global speed trends.
