This paper presents the installation process and preliminary results of a real-time system for monitoring and collecting ship motions and weather. The system is installed onboard a container ship deployed in a 15-day itinerary express service between Azores and continental Portugal. The onboard system is composed by an ultrasonic flowmeter, a GPS, an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), a wave spectrum estimator, a LoRa + 4G gateway, and a weather station to monitor the wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, temperature, rainfall, among other variables. The system has the capability to record and send information to a server in mainland through 4G generation of mobile technology, when close to shore. The monitoring system is employed as part of ROUTING project, with the objective of validating and tuning the adopted ship model and collecting results for the planned generation of a grey model that assimilates real data to improve prediction of ship behaviour in seaways. In this paper, the preliminary results of the ship weather routing system including the sensors recorded data from the first trials from June 2021 to January 2022 are presented.
