Several technologies and projects have been developed for reducing emissions from ships both at the design and operation levels. One possible solution for existing ships is the installation of automated systems that optimize the fuel consumption by adjusting the parameters of the propulsion system as a function of a set of variables that are monitored continuously throughout the voyage. In this paper a one-year dataset collected from a ship's automated fuel optimization system is analysed. The data includes the propulsion system parameters, environmental conditions, and fuel consumption of a container ship operating off the coast of Portugal and to the Atlantic islands of Madeira and Azores. This dataset is first pre-processed and then analysed with the objective of identifying the contribution of the parameters and of the different operational decisions on the ship fuel consumption.
