The pseudo-shakedown behaviour of elastoplastic rectangular plates, made from mild steel or aluminium alloy, subjected to repeated impacts is studied using a numerical simulation method. In a previous study a simple critical displacement-based criterion was proposed to predict pseudo-shakedown and the concepts of two critical displacements, namely ‘necking displacement’ and ‘failure displacement’ have been proposed. The wide applicability of this critical displacement criterion is re-examined in this study. To quickly and precisely estimate the magnitudes of these two critical displacements, it is shown that to predict them it is possible to perform either a single impact or quasi-static punching. The mechanics behind predicting the critical displacements under repeated impacts by conducting either single impact or quasi-static punching is discussed and clarified.
