Rudan, S., Garbatov, Y. and Guedes Soares, C. (2002) , “Hot-Spot Stress Assessment Based on Different Sea State Conditions”, Proceedings of the 15th International Symposium on Theory and Practice of Shipbuilding (SORTA´02), 14-16 November, Trogir, Croatia, pp. 427-432

This paper discusses the spectral approach as a tool for fatigue analysis. The spectral approach is described in four steps: hydrodynamics analysis, structural analysis, long-term stress range distribution and fatigue damage assessment. Fatigue damage is evaluated based on hot-spot approach that assumes finite element method application for a generation of hot-spot stresses. A typical ship structural detail is analysed and a discussion with respect to the evaluation procedures is given, including the applicability of different modelling and extrapolation techniques. A variation of stress concentration factors for different sea state conditions is evaluated and a new definition about stress concentration factor is also proposed here.
