An experimental programme and nonlinear finite element analysis are carried out to examine the ultimate strength characteristics and to predict the collapse of stiffened panels with a crack and pits, under axial compressive actions. Axial compressive tests of damaged stiffened panel specimens have been conducted to investigate the effect of crack and pits on the ultimate strength. The test results are used to validate the finite element models. Expanding the results of the limited number of specimen tested, a series of nonlinear finite element analysis are performed with the validated numerical models to illustrate the ultimate strength reduction characteristics of plate elements due to crack and pits by varying the relative position between crack and pits, length of crack and pit characteristics. The present results are compared with earlier results with single damage, confirming the complexity of stiffened panel collapse behaviour accounting for different damage scenarios.
