Sutherland, L. and Guedes Soares, C. (2003), “The Effects of Test Parameters on the Impact Response of Glass Reinforced Plastic using an Experimental Design Approach”, Composites Science & Technologies, Vol. 63, pp. 1-18

An instrumented falling weight machine was used to investigate the effects of test parameters on the impact response of low fibre-volume glass reinforced polyester coupons. Statistical experimental design techniques were used to plan and analyse the data. Simple graphs were used to present and interpret the results. Damage was complex and varied with the test set-up. All the parameters considered were found to affect the responses, and complex interactions were seen between these effects. The variation of impact behaviour with coupon-scale test set-up shows that there is no single defining impact response of a given material and hence that such tests must be carefully designed to correctly predict full-scale response.
