The influence of the uncertainty in initial conditions on the profile of the largest wave is considered in this paper in two typical short-term sea states. The associated uncertainty is investigated with the Monte Carlo simulation method and the largest wave height is extracted from the numerical simulation performed with the fully nonlinear Chalikov-Sheinin model which has been validated before. To detect the largest wave height in each realization, it is proved that both zero-up-crossing and zero-down-crossing methods have to be utilized in the wave-by-wave analysis. Sensitivity to the initial random-phase or amplitude model is analysed, revealing that the largest crest, trough and crest-to-trough heights in a sea state are only sensitive to the amplitudes of a certain range of free waves (around the peak wavenumber). For the Chalikov-Sheinin model, three types of uncertainties are identified in the initial conditions, involving the natural, knowledge and mixed uncertainties. To assess their effects on the profile of the largest wave, a series of output parameters are defined in this work and analysed with statistical methods.
